Winter Whittier

So, it's mid January.  We just got back from a 2 week vacation in Michigan with family.  And instead of resting and recovering, we decide that we need an adventure.  What do we decide to do?  Why go to Whittier of course!  Isn't that what all Alaskan's do in the winter?  Turns out, they don't.......in fact it's not much more than a ghost town in January.  Now we know.  :-)

It was really exciting to drive through the tunnel!

Once we arrived we were ensconced in fog.  The sunshine that we had enjoyed on the 45 minute drive from Anchorage was gone.  Instead we were surrounded by a thick mist and an eerie silence.

The fishing boats have been plucked from the water and set out to dry.

During our short visit the fog lifted and then resettled, lifted and then resettled, lifted.......you get the picture.

I've always loved reflections and the quiet stillness lended itself well to my fascination.

Once we had satisfied our curiosity at the marina we headed back to the tunnel.  On our way we got distracted by a side road.

At the very end of the road was a couple of bunkers.  Most of them were locked down but the very last one was wide open.

We pulled ourselves away from these interesting structures in time to be the second to last vehicle through the tunnel.

Coming out of the tunnel we were bathed in sunshine.

The warmer than usual winter here has left these trails bare of their normal snowy coat.  The amount of greenery amazed me!

Again, dabbling in reflections and in awe of the icy ripples.

We stopped to take a picture.  Shhhh.......this may be our family picture for Christmas next year, so don't get too bored of it!  I just couldn't wait to share.  :-)

I would say that the trip was well worth it and a perfect mini adventure for a mid winter day!

  3. Addendum: The Whittier tunnel was completed in April of 1943. It consisted of a 1-mile tunnel through Begich Peak and a 2.5-mile tunnel through Maynard Mountain. Among other reasons, Whittier was selected as a rail port because the notoriously consistent cantankerous weather reduced its likely-hood of being bombed by the Japanese. For years the tunnel served only train traffic. But in 1998 construction began to build a highway to Maynard Mountain and develop the 2.5 mile tunnel so that car and train traffic could share the space. Today, vehicle and train traffic to and from Whittier is controlled and timed so that everyone gets where they need to go. Source= http://dot.alaska.gov/creg/whittiertunnel/history.shtml
